The Trail Crosses Ancestral Native American Territory
California is the home to the largest number of Native American tribes and the most diverse indigenous people in the United States. Many of the tribal groups shown on this map speak different languages and have traditions unique to their tribe—their ancestral homelands, established for thousands of years, extend far beyond modern political boundaries. These Native cultures overlap in ways this map cannot show through shared resources, trade, and family relationships.
